Fault find and service upon a Thorn Appolo 30/50B central heating boiler

Boiler fitted in 1983. Hasnt been serviced since we bought the house in 2003. (Yes - I know - oh dear!). Boiler has needed a thermocouple every few years. Heating dropped off Friday 9th December. Pilot light wouldnt stay on. OK says I, down to parts centre, put a new thermocouple in it on Saturday morning. Run & Test, all seems ok, went away for weekend. Came back Sunday night, no heating, pilot light out. Fired up ok, running ok. Ran all evening Sunday. As a trial I switched off the heating let boiler cool down and monitored the pilot staying in for a few hours (even in the wind) Thinking all was well switched heating on again, as just as gas valve opened for burner to kick in, pilot dropped out. Relit, got it up to temp, ran it for two days straight no problems what so ever until you let boiler cool down. Realistic boiler hasnt been serviced for 8 years, so settings/pressures probably all to cock, and feasable there might be a problem with the temp limit switch in the exchanger or the incoming gas valve. Im the son of a long retired heating engineer, and a M&E Design/Process engineer hence above fault finding, but now reaching the limits of my own comfort zone. Need a GAS/Safe Heating Engineer to visit to perform onward diagnosis and repair. Im off my work on 14/12/1973 and can be contacted on 07990 544 389. Job is in Garrowhill, Glasgow, G69 6NP
