Fix failed back door (UPVC)

My UPVC back door (single door) unlocks by the key and you can hear the locks moving but the handle no longer returns to horizontal and the door will not open. I need somebody to replace whatever needs replacing so that I can use the back door as normal. I have tried to remove the internal handle via the 2 long screws but once they were out the handle would not separate from the door. Access to the outside of the door (if required) will need to be through the kitchen window or over the locked back gate. Thanks
