Gas oven

My gas oven - When lighting, I hold the control knob in and turn to correct setting for lighting, press ignition/spark button and it all seems to start up ok. After holding the control knob in for between 10-15 seconds like directed in the manual, I let go. Normally the oven stays lit (as expected) but now once I release the control knob the gas shuts off completely. The only thing I noticed just before it started doing this, was while the oven was in use I went to turn the heat up. The control knob seemed stiff and needed a little extra pressure to turn. From this moment on, the gas shut off and will now no longer stay lit leaving me unable to cook. Top oven works fine, as do all the hob rings. It's just the main oven with the problem.
