Get a syphon unit out of a toilet

The flush will not work due to the plastic syphon plate possibly being broken, but on looking for a nut to undo to take the syphon unit off, it appears to be part of the back part of the base - you cannot get to it, therefore we can't take the syphon unit out. It looks more and more like I am going to have to buy a whole toilet for the sake of a piece of plastic! Help.
