Sink food waste disposer

I own a ISE (In-Sink-Erator) Food Waste Disposer, which is in my kitchen sink. It has stopped working. I cannot locate any obvious blockages. When I turn it on, it makes a humming noise, as if it is about to start, but then goes silent. This causes the 'trip-switch' to flick, which may suggest it is an electrical problem. However now the sink itself is no longer draining without a plunger.
